On 23 March 2019, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universitas Airlangga (FST UNAIR) held a community service event, which is a Basic Molecular Genetics Training. The training that was given by Biology lecturers of FST UNAIR was organized to introduce the concept of basic molecular genetics and give technical skills of experimenting on basic molecular genetics. This activity was participated by high school students from Nganjuk, Jombang, and Sidoarjo regencies.
The training was opened by the Head of Biology Department FST UNAIR, Dr. Sucipto Hariyanto, DEA and continued with pre-test. The first study material, which was about the basic techniques in using micropipettes, was delivered by Almando Geraldi, S.Si., Ph.D. Micropipettes are the basic tools of a molecular genetics work. Mastering the techniques of using micropipettes is the key to succeed in molecular genetics.
The following material was about Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), an amplification of a certain DNA fragment that is used to, for example, clone a specific gene or identify an organism. The PCR material was delivered by M. Hilman Fuadil A, S.Si, M.Si, which began from the theory and followed by practicing an experiment on PCR.
The last material about DNA electrophoresis was given by Sugiharto, S.Si, M.Si. DNA electrophoresis is a technique used to observe and conduct visualization on DNA. With this technique, DNA fragment will be fragmented based on the molecule weight. DNA electrophoresis in this training was used to confirm the result of PCR that has been done previously, whether it managed to amplify the expected DNA fragment.
The activity was closed with post-test, of which result would be compared to the pre-test result to evaluate whether this activity succeeded to increase the participants’ knowledge on Molecular Genetics. The post-test results show that the participants have increased knowledge on Molecular Genetics, which indicates the success of this training. Priyatmoko, S.Pd., M.Ma from SMAN 1 Prambon, Nganjuk achieved the highest score and became the best participant in this training.
Messages from the participants point out that they feel satisfied with this activity and expect that similar trainings on various fields of biology can be organized in the future. The training was then closed by Prof. Bambang Irawan, M.Sc. The knowledge gained from this training can improve the quality of biology learning process in the high schools where the participants teach.
