The Biology Department at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again demonstrated its commitment to international community service through innovations in livestock farming. The research team has successfully developed probiotics and single-cell protein (SCP) specifically designed to enhance the health and productivity of livestock.
The probiotics are formulated to improve the microbial balance in the digestive tracts of livestock, thereby boosting immune resilience and digestive efficiency. Meanwhile, single-cell protein, derived from selected microorganisms, provides an eco-friendly alternative protein source that serves as a valuable dietary supplement for livestock.
Drs. Agus Supriyanto, M.Kes., a key speaker at the event, highlighted that the project stemmed from concerns about livestock farmers’ dependence on antibiotics and dwindling conventional protein sources. “We aim to offer a sustainable and safe solution to support food security,” he stated. The community service event took place on August 10, 2024, at ERWE Farm in Tlekung, Junrejo District, bringing together livestock farmers from across Batu City. Twelve students from diverse countries, including Japan, Yemen, Pakistan, Mali, and Cameroon, participated in the initiative. This effort reflects UNAIR’s commitment to making a meaningful global impact through research and innovation. By harnessing biotechnology, the Biology UNAIR team hopes to assist farmers in increasing production in a more efficient and sustainable manner. This initiative exemplifies the essential role that higher education institutions play in supporting global societal development and fostering sustainable progress.
